Changing Canvas Background Color

If your video doesn’t take up the entire canvas (for example, if you are editing a vertical video on a horizontal canvas), the empty space behind it will default to black. Flixier makes it easy to change this background to a solid color, a custom gradient, or a branded image.

How to Access the Background Settings

  1. Ensure you have no media selected on your timeline. You can do this by clicking anywhere on the dark, blank workspace surrounding your video canvas.
  2. Look at the Settings menu on the right side of the screen.
  3. Locate the Background section.
  4. Click the color swatch to open the background customization menu.

Background Customization Options

Once the background menu is open, you can choose from three different tabs at the top of the panel:

  • Color: Apply a solid background. You can click anywhere on the color spectrum, use the eyedropper tool to sample a color directly from your video, or type a specific Hex code into the text box. You can also quickly select from your saved Brand Kit swatches at the bottom.
  • Gradient: Create a smooth transition between multiple colors. You can click the gradient slider to add different color stops, select specific colors for each stop, and adjust the exact angle of the gradient using the rotational dial.
  • Images: Apply a custom, textured, or stylized background image. Click the large + (plus) icon under the Brand Kit section to upload any image directly from your device. Once uploaded, your images will be saved, allowing you to apply them to your canvas with a single click.
