Safe Zones for Social Media Videos

When posting to platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, the app interfaces often overlay buttons, captions, and profile icons on top of your video. Flixier’s Safe Zones feature helps you preview exactly where these elements will appear, ensuring your crucial text and visuals are never blocked.

Accessing the Safe Zones Menu

  • To reveal the main project Settings panel on the right side of your screen, you must deselect any active media.
  • Click anywhere on the dark, blank workspace surrounding your video canvas (don’t click the video itself or clips on the timeline).
  • Check your video's aspect ratio. Safe Zones will only appear in the Settings menu if your project is set to 9:16 Vertical or 16:9 Standard. (If you are using 1:1 Square or 2:3, the Safe Zones menu will remain hidden).

How to Enable Safe Zones for Vertical Videos

  • With a 9:16 Vertical resolution selected, locate the Show Safe Zones section in the right-side Settings panel.
  • Click the specific icon for TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube to see that platform's layout. You can also click All to overlay all overlapping zones simultaneously.
  • Semi-transparent grey blocks will overlay your canvas to represent where the platform's UI elements will sit.

Safe Zones for Horizontal Videos

  • If your project Resolution is set to 16:9 Standard, the Safe Zones menu will dynamically update to reflect traditional broadcast standards.
  • Instead of social media icons, you can click the Title Area or Action Area buttons.
  • This will project standard red rectangular outlines onto your canvas to guide your framing.

Additional Alignment Tools (Grid and Snapping)

To further assist with framing, Flixier offers grid lines and snapping rules.

Click View More beneath the Safe Zones section to expand your advanced canvas settings.

  • Grid: Check the box for Show grid. You can use the numerical dials to add specific amounts of Horizontal lines and Vertical lines to your preview canvas.
  • Snap Options: Ensure your elements lock perfectly into place by checking the boxes for Snap to stageSnap when resizingSnap to other objects, and Adjust snap to crop.
